American Music Abroad ~ Summer 2009
July 13, 2009: Liberty Tour has just departed Eisenstadt where the afternoon included lunch, tour of the Esterhazy Palace (where Joseph Haydn was employed) and cathedral where Haydn is buried. We are about 45 minutes from our return to Vienna where we will check into our hotel and go to the city for dinner and an evening of Vienese waltzing. Tomorrow morning will be an early one as we will head to the airport at 6:30 a.m. Parents check the status of Austrian Air Flight 93 from Vienna to Dulles. Home soon!
July 12, 2009: Liberty Tour has given its final concert in the beautiful town of Villach, Austria. Strange venue...little town square, and a hatch of flying insects lent a bit of a Hitchcock element. Small audience but appreciative. Instruments have been packed for the return flight. Staying in a Holiday Inn with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. Sadly we'll be gone tomorrow before their concert. Headed back to Vienna tomorrow.
July 11, 2009: Viva Venezia! A spectacular sunny day in Venice for the Liberty Tour! Your students have learned about bartering, many of them scoring gondola rides at 12n, a bargain! Many have eaten their body weight in gelato. Food, shopping, street musicians (ever heard YMCA in Italian?) Great concert last nice in a wonderful venue. Appreciative audience, and a special visit from Robinson alum 1LT Beth Sutey. Back to Austria tomorrow where Libery Tour will give it's final concert in Villach.
July 10, 2009: Liberty Tour is in Italy! Abano
Great concert last night in Westendorf followed by Tyrolian Folk Evening.
Sort of difficult to describe...definitely ask your kids about it.
Tonight's concert is in a park near the hotel. Few thunderstorms, but
the venue is covered. Posters
for our concert are all over town. Venice
July 9, 2009: Liberty Tour enjoying free day in Westendorf. Ski lift, hiking, cycling, street market, laundry, cafes, pool, and more. Concert tonight is here in town. Post concert is crazy Tyrolian Folklore Evening. There we cross paths with AMA Silver Tour. Liberty Tour tomorrow....Italy!
July 8, 2009: Dance party in Westendorf last night ended with Doyle and Natsuhara in Michael Jackson tribute. Rainy night in Austria. Weather cleared a bit this morning. Visit to Rattenberg for a bit, then to the glacier. Took 3 gondolas to get to the top. SNOWING at the top! Lunch while watching skiing on the slopes. Beautiful spot. Few stray snowballs, too. On the bus now headed to Mayrhofen for dinner and concert. A joy to look at snow capped Alps in July!
July 7, 2009: Liberty Tour has arrived in Westendorf in the Tyrol region of Austria. Great concert last night with a large audience at a wonderful outdoor venue in Garmisch. Relaxed morning today at spa hotel. Parents ask your kids about the food at this place! Lunch stop with a tour of Schloss Tratzberg and then to Austria. Tomorrow is a long day but really fun. We will visit Rattenberg and then enjoy lunch (and possible snow balls) on a glacier followed by an evgening concert. Side note...your kids have learned how to do laundry. ;-)
July 6, 2009: Liberty Tour has arrived in Garmisch. Less humidity here, yay! Huge resort hotel. Students enjoying a little pool time before dressing for dinner and tonight's concert. Was great to start seeing the German Alps today. Olympic ski jump is across the street from this resort. More mountains tomorrow as we head back to Austria.
July 5, 2009: Great concert last night in Benfeld included words from the Mayor and a reception for the students. This morning, a visit to Konisburg Castle, then after lunch to Struthof Concentration Camp. Sobering. Parents, be proud of your kids. They handled it with maturity, grace, and dignity. Back to Germany tomorrow.
July 4, 2009: Greetings from France! Liberty Tour has arrived in Obernai. Enjoyed bbq in Black Forest last night. Today a fitting July 4...lunch and a tour of Colmar, birthplace of Bartholdi, sculptor of the Statue of Liberty! Concert tonight in Benfield. Happy 4th!
July 3, 2009: Liberty Tour 09 has left Dinkelsbuhl. Concert last night had small audience but was best performance so far. Have spent the afternoon in Heidelberg for lunch, castle visit, browing. Headed now to Black Forest. All are well!
July 2, 2009, from Mr. Cook: All is well on the 2009 AMA Liberty Tour! Since our departure the students have enjoyed the culture of Vienna, Austria, the city of musicians. Their visit included time in the city center, a tour of the Vienna Opera, and an outdoor performance at Shönbrunn Palace Gardens. Since then the tour has traveled to Dinkelsbuhl, Germany where they will give their second performance this evening (July 2).
